Offer to teach the audience how to vanish an elephant! Display a draped tray, a picture of an elephant and two boards to "cage" the elephant. Turn your back to the audience, and perform the effect for an imaginary audience in front of you, while the real audience has a backstage view of the working. Place the two boards on the tray. Show the elephant card, and drop it between the two boards. Remove the boards and show them on both sides. The elephant has vanished! The real audience however, has seen how the effect is accomplished, because they have seen the elephant card drop through a slot in the tray into a ribbon harness underneath. The elephant is not visible from the front, being concealed by the drape. Offer to repeat the effect, this time with the real audience in the front. Again place the two boards on the tray, and drop the elephant between them. Remove the boards and freely show on both sides. The elephant has vanished. Explain that there may be a few clever people in the audience who Have figured out that the elephant is behind the drape. As you say this, turn the tray around so that the audience sees the elephant hanging in the ribbon harness behind the drape. Show this happen, you continue, you have no recourse but to use some "real magic". Turn the tray, drape side again facing audience. Gesture dramatically to make the elephant vanish, then peel away the drape to show the elephant has indeed vanished! Both the drape and tray are freely shown all sides, with no trace of the elephant. Inspired by Jack Hughes' Lady Vanishes. This is a larger stage version with an elephant card instead of a playing card, and some modifications, so that the tray appears narrower than the elephant card that vanishes. Supplied with all the required props, ready to work, with complete instructions.
