Multiplying Sponge Balls

The magician displays a ball at his fingertips. A little wave and it multiplies into two balls. Another wave and there are three. Finally, a forth ball is produced. The magician then proceeds to take one of the balls away, toss it into the air and it vanishes, only to appear back with the other three!
